Update on Relief Efforts

posted Thursday, October 25th, 1:01 PM PST

Praise God. With the help of dozens of volunteers, and the leadership of a solid team of amazing volunteer coordinators, the Rock Church reached out to over 5,000 people in San Diego County on Wednesday, October 24.

Some of the people reached out to have been isolated from any support at all, but with the coordination of logistics, the Red Cross, the police organizations, as well as donated vehicles, supplies, bodies, and even helicopters, the Christian community has been using the Rock Church as a focal point to reach areas on the far side of numerous police roadblocks.

The effort continues, we sent out a convoy of eleven trucks to Mountain View Community Church in Ramona already this morning, and the orders are still rolling.

A little breakdown of some of the individual items from orders - 1,000 Hot Dogs & Buns, 300 packs of Lunch Meat, 500 T-Shirts, 500 Shorts, Air Mattresses, Cots, Cases and Cases of Water, and the list goes on.

Rebuild on the Rock Program

Last Updated Friday, November 9th, 12:52 PM PST

(1) Vouchers for Rebuild Kits (this program will be concluded on November 30, 2007)

Everyone that attended Rock Church services on Sunday, October 28 received Relief Vouchers, and were asked to go out into the community and find wildfire victims – people that have lost their homes. After making contact, victims are given "relief vouchers", which entitles them to receive Rebuild Kits after they sign up online.

The contents of the kits are dependent upon donations received. At this time, we're contacting local/national businesses and organizations, and asking them to donate to the kits. If you, your company or organization is interested in donating items for our Rebuild Kits, please email rebuild@rockreliefsd.org.

If you received a voucher and lost your home, click here to access the online Rebuild Kit redemption form.

(2) Needs Assessment

The Rock has committed and/or distributed all donated goods at this time. Please contact the following organizations for assistance.

(3) Volunteer Database

A database of individuals that want to assist with rebuilding efforts is being developed. We encourage everyone to "do something" in this time of need. Assistance and support will be needed by the wildfire victims for a long time to come. We hope that you will join us in being there for them now, and in the future.

Click here to enter your contact information in our database. We will contact you as opportunties arise.

(4) Distribution Center

The Rock is currently operating a relief supply distribution center out of our Ruffin location. Unfortunately, access to this location is limited. Please email rebuild@rockreliefsd.org (use Subject: Distribution of Products and Services) if you have access to warehouse space.

(5) Local Churches

The Rock is meeting with other San Diego churches the week of October 29th to develop a support plan that addresses short and long term needs of wildfire victims.

Advice to Those Serving

Last updated: Tuesday, October 23rd, 9:30 AM PST

When responding to one of the shelters in this emergency remember this is not a church event, we are part of the county response team.

  • Leave bibles in car and provide one only when asked.
  • You are there to encourage people and serve
  • Be watchful for opportunities to help in any way that is needed.
  • Share your testimony when appropriate

Don't Say…

  • "I know how you feel" because you don't.
  • "It is God's will that this happened" because it is not that simple.
  • "Be happy for what you had" because crisis requires grieving

Do Say…

  • "You have my heartfelt sympathy"
  • "My heart goes out to you"
  • "Friends are here share your grief"
  • "No words can express my sincere sorrow"
  • "I cannot imagine the pain you are in at this time"
  • "My prayers are with you at this time"
  • "I feel for you in your loss"
  • "I feel privileged to serve you at this time"
  • "Please accept my sincere sympathy"
  • "You have the focus of our loving prayers at this time"
  • "What can I do to help you at this time"
  • "I am here to help you in any way I can"

Seven things to remember:

  • Practice active listening
  • Give honest and brief answers making time for listening verse talking.
  • Acknowledge and validate their feelings.
  • Do not preach or give sermons.
  • You are there to help them through the pain and not avoid the pain.
  • Everyone must grieve and everyone does not grieve the same.
  • Trust that God's is living and active and will speak to their heart.

Encouraging Biblical Truths

God has not and will not abandon you in you time of need.

Heb 13:5-6 "Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you." So we say with confidence, "The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?"

God has, through His power, gotten you through hard times in the past.

James 1:2-5 Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, 3 because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. 4 Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. 5 If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him.

God wants you to call on Him, so He can comfort you. Jeremiah 33:3,

Jer 33:3 "Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know."

God is the God of comfort you need.

2 Cor 1:3-5 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, 4 who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God. 5 For just as the sufferings of Christ flow over into our lives, so also through Christ our comfort overflows.

God has not and will not abandon you in you time of need.

Heb 13:5-6 "Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you." So we say with confidence, "The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?"
